- Know your product; your skills, accomplishments, values and interests. Define the product – You. You are the product. So the first phase involves conducting a personal inventory of your skills, interests, and accomplishments.
- Find the work that needs to be done that fits with your capabilities. Once you know your skills and what you want to do, it’s important to stay in touch with job categories that offer the best current opportunities. Also, as you think about a career change, identifying target companies you would love to work for can be very helpful. If you are changing careers, investigate jobs and industries through online and informational interviews to determine the fit between what you offer and what is required. Develop a weekly action plan with activity targets to keep you on track.
- Networking. Networking is always important, but when you are looking to change careers, your network is often your most valuable asset. Reach out to people you know to learn more about what they do or the companies they work for. Share your goals and look for their help to open doors in your new field.
