Making a Successful Career Pivot

Are you considering a career change?

At Transition Solutions, we’ve been helping companies and individuals with workforce changes for thirty years. Many of our clients find themselves considering new career options due to a constantly evolving work environment and sometimes the elimination of whole industries and job functions.  As per the quote below from Clifford Hakim, as you consider a career pivot, it’s important to shift from an “employed” to “self-employed” attitude.

“To succeed in today’s workplace; each of us must view ourselves as self-employed, even if we hold traditional roles inside a company.” Clifford Hakim, We Are ALL Self-Employed.

To achieve a “self-employed” mindset you must:

  1. Know your product; your skills, accomplishments, values and interests. Define the product – You. You are the product. So the first phase involves conducting a personal inventory of your skills, interests, and accomplishments.
  • Find the work that needs to be done that fits with your capabilities. Once you know your skills and what you want to do, it’s important to stay in touch with job categories that offer the best current opportunities. Also, as you think about a career change, identifying target companies you would love to work for can be very helpful.  Glassdoor is a useful resource to learn more about companies and they recently shared a list of the best companies to work for in America based on employee reviews.
