Interviewing in today’s job market can be very unique, but did you realize how many “to do’s” align with traditional methods?
At Transition Solutions, we have been helping companies and individuals with workforce changes for 35 years.
Interviewing today often begins and concludes with video meetings and group video chats. Gaining expertise in all the nuances of the video world will definitely give you an edge. In addition, following some of the “old ways” will get you noticed.
How to prepare for your interview
- Make certain your resume and LinkedIn profiles maximize your value.
Strong marketing documents get you noticed – and when you develop them with your career coach, you own it, making it easier to answer tough interview questions.
- Understand your skills, strengths and what makes you different.
Align with the job you are interviewing for, understanding what the organizations needs are and how you can meet and exceed those needs. When you show how you can fit, you will move along in the process.
- Be prepared for all developments.
Have at the ready all documents, reference sheets, and mostly time. A great interview may turn into multiple interviews right away. Don’t set any appointments too close together.
- Clarify the timeline for decisions and let them know that, if you haven’t heard by then, you will reach out.
Be your own advocate and always follow up.
- Send out “thank you” notes individually, to everyone that interviewed you.
Do not prioritize who should or shouldn’t get one. Usually, it’s only one person that ultimately says “yes”, but there are many in the process that can say “no”.
Do not be trite with your “thank you” note. Be specific to the conversation you had with each individual and strengthen the connection between you and the job.
